The NS 1600 locomotive, like its siblings the 1700 and 1800, is an icon on the Dutch railways. Alstom, the manufacturer, received the first orders for the 1600 series from the NS in 1978, with the first 1600s introduced in 1981. The split of NS Reizigers and NS Cargo in 1999 led to the introduction of a new series, the 1800s. The 1600 series continued to be used for freight transport, both domestically and internationally.
