The 'Semovente' 75/18 M40, a Fiat Ansaldo creation, was deployed by Regio Esercito in North Africa from late 1941, seeing action until World War II's end. Based on the M13/40's chassis, it was Italy's most numerous armored vehicle to significantly threaten Allied tanks. Its 75mm gun packed a punch, even against heavily armored foes like the Sherman. However, a thin armor and unreliable engine, derived from the M13/40, hindered its effectiveness. The Italian Semovente was notably employed by Ariete and Littorio Armoured Divisions in North Africa, and by Repubblica Sociale in Italy's north until the war's end.
