The VL53L0X, a compact module housing ST Microelectronics' time-of-flight ranging system, is a carrier board for this IC. We advise studying the VL53L0X datasheet before use. This sensor employs ST's FlightSense technology to measure the time it takes for infrared laser light pulses to reflect off the nearest object, functioning as a miniature lidar system. It accurately determines absolute distances up to 2 meters with 1 mm resolution, though effective range and accuracy depend on ambient conditions, target characteristics, and sensor configuration. The sensor's accuracy can vary from ±3% to over ±10% under different conditions. Ranging measurements and sensor settings configuration are accessible via the I2C (TWI) interface, with additional pins for shutdown input and interrupt output. While the VL53L0X is an excellent IC, its small, leadless LGA package and recommended 2.8 V operating voltage can pose challenges for typical users and microcontrollers operating at 3.3 V or 5 V.
