Samuel 'Kink' Kinkead, a distinguished aviator, earned two Distinguished Service Crosses with the Royal Naval Air Service, two Distinguished Flying Crosses with the early RAF, and the Distinguished Service Order in Russia. Known for his exceptional piloting skills, post-war he pioneered long-range aviation and was selected as a leading racing ace for the international Schneider Trophy in Venice, 1927. Unfortunately, he was killed at just 31 in 1928 while attempting to break the World Air Speed record. His legacy lives on through memorials at Cranwell, the RAF Club in Piccadilly, Fawley, and a permanent exhibition in the Kinkead Room at Calshot, his final takeoff point.
