Born in Dieppe, Jean Rédélé chose the name Alpine for his cars after achieving success in the French Alps with his Renault 4C in 1954. He continually developed his Renault-based vehicles, achieving rally success with attractive bodies and Renault's support. Initially, 1.5-liter Alpine cars were used in Le Mans in the mid-sixties, but it was the 3-liter formula introduced in 1968 that paved the way for Alpine's overall victory. The A220 resulted from combining a new tubular frame with a new aerodynamic body and a 3-liter V8 Gordini engine created by combining two 1.5-liter blocks. On the right of the watercolor, a factory car driven by Jean-Pierre Jabouille and Jean Guichet is visible. To its left, an Ecurie Savin-Calberson 220 driven by Mauro Bianchi and Patrick Depailler is shown. Neither vehicle reached the finish line.
