Thomas Nast was born in Germany. He was the son of a Bavarian Regimental Band Musician. He moved with his family to New York In 1846.  Before Nast was 25 he had become the most renown artist-cartoonist in America. Abraham Lincoln referred to him as the best recruiting agent of the union and Ulysses Grant noted that he did as much as any man to help preserve the country. His annual Christmas drawings featured by Harper's Weekly were anticipated and regaled with as much interest as the coming of Santa Himself.  From the Bishop of Myra as the patron of sailors and children to the Dutch Interpretation of Magician and gift giver known as Sinter Claes, Thomas Nast created the world renown American Santa as we know him today.  These lasting treasures aof art are being made available in a unique and collectible form, beautifully reproduced, capturing the simple and joyus story of Santa Claus and the spirit of Christmas.
