Arnold Hbner, born in 1919, son of a World War I veteran, joined the Luftwaffe in 1939. After service in Poland, he transferred to FlaK artillery in 1940. Assigned to 3. Batterie, I/Flak Regiment 33, he spent early 1941 in Holland. Transferred to Libya, he saw action at Mersa Brega, earning an Iron Cross 2nd Class. During Operation Battleaxe, his unit held Point 208, engaging British Matilda II tanks. His 8.8cm FlaK36 gun destroyed several tanks, earning him an Iron Cross 1st Class. Throughout the campaign, his skill earned him the FlaK Kampfabzeichen. In Operation Crusader, his gun destroyed eight more tanks, totaling 24 for the year. His exceptional performance led to him and fellow gunner Erich Heintze being awarded the Knight's Cross by Rommel in 1942.
