The F-100 Super Sabre, codenamed 'Hun', emerged from the innovative minds at North American Aviation in the late 1940s, initially known as the Sabre 45 due to its 45-degree wing sweep. Though not explicitly requested by the USAF, an unsolicited proposal led to the production of two prototypes, with the first taking flight in May 1953. Despite some challenging flight characteristics, the type was commissioned by the USAF and entered service late in 1954. Throughout its lifespan, the F-100 underwent numerous upgrades and was officially retired in 1979. A total of 2,294 Super Sabres were manufactured at NAA, with 242 lost during the Vietnam War.
