Geisenoceras, an extinct squid-like cephalopod, once thrived in the Devonian period around 400 million years ago, boasting a long, pointed shell. The lighter sections were hollow spaces within its shell, serving for buoyancy and propulsion in water. The darker part is the surrounding rock where the fossil was encased. Initially, scientists believed these and similar specimens belonged to a single species, Orthoceras regulare. However, it was later discovered that there were over 2,500 distinct, conical-shelled nautiloid species, making the taxonomic sorting a complex task.
