As the war situation worsened for Germany towards its end, a need arose for a new, affordable jet fighter that was easy to produce and fly. In an astonishingly brief period of just 3 months, from design to the first prototype flight, Heinkel introduced the compact, sleek He162. This lightweight fighter boasted mainly wooden construction and was propelled by a BMW003 turbojet, making it the swiftest jet fighter of WWII, with a top speed of 838km/h. Reaching combat units in late March 1945, the little fighter achieved some combat successes despite severe fuel and parts scarcity.
