BFD offers a low-resource method for constant pseudowire data path monitoring and data plane failure detection. It supports asynchronous BFD for VCCV, as per RFC 5885. While ping operations can also detect failures, BFD uses fewer resources and is faster. BFD for pseudowires is compatible with LDP-based Layer 2 circuits, BGP-based Layer 2 VPNs, and LDP-based or BGP-based VPLS.
