The L-4 Grasshopper, a military variant of the renowned Piper J3 Cub, boasted a structure of fabric-covered frame, wooden spar, metal-ribbed wings, and metal-tube fuselage and empennage. Its two-place tandem cockpit offered dual-controls, while an air-cooled, flat-4 piston engine drove a fixed-pitch propeller.A versatile tactical aircraft of WWII, the L-4 served multiple roles such as artillery fire direction, pilot training, glider pilot instruction, courier service, and reconnaissance. Bill Piper, Jr. famously remarked, 'All we had to do was paint the Cub olive drab to create a military airplane.'Though unarmed, some L-4s were equipped with bazookas for strike roles. Notably, the final European WWII dogfight involved an L-4 against a Fieseler Storch, with the L-4 crew forcing the Storch to crash using .45 caliber pistols.During the war, at least 5,703 J-3/L4 aircraft were produced for military use. Many Cubs remain airworthy today. This artwork pays homage to the often unsung L-4 Grasshopper.
