The Lockheed L-749's design started in 1939, catering to Pan American Airways and Transcontinental & Western Air's (now Trans World Airlines) need for a 40-passenger domestic airliner. Production began, but World War II led to the commandeering of aircraft for USAAF service as C-69 transports, with the first flight on January 9, 1943. Civil certification occurred on December 11, 1945, and the aircraft entered service with Pan Am and TWA, inaugurating a regular US-Paris service on February 6, 1946. By 1949, increasing air travel demand prompted the development of the L-1049 Super Constellation, featuring an 18 feet, 4 inches longer fuselage and 3,400-hp Wright 972TC-18DA-3 Turbo-Compound engines.
