The texture of this fabric actually comes from the traditional way of making cotton from long ago. They plant cotton trees themselves, spin the cotton by hand to make yarn. The thickness of the yarn is determined by the craftsmen's fingertips as they spin. There are thin parts and thick parts. When weaving with this yarn, it creates a fabric with a thick, rough texture.
Traditional dyeing in Laos often involves pre-dyeing. Instead of dyeing the fabric, the basis of Laotian fabric making is dyeing the raw yarn. They cultivate indigo plants and make indigo dye. Each bundle of yarn is dyed one by one. Starting with a light blue color, it gets darker with more dyeing rounds. The dark colors require multiple rounds of dyeing, washing, and repeating. It's a painstaking process.
As for hand-weaving, it takes at least a week to prepare the warp threads. For each weaving session, they prepare 20-30 meters of warp threads. Laotian fabric is not as wide as a kimono sash but around 80cm wide. It's a challenging task to weave the weft threads from left to right within this width. And of course, it's all hand-woven.
To create this indigo-dyed fabric, it requires the combined effort and affection of three craftsmen: the hand-spinning craftsman, the hand-dyeing craftsman, and the hand-weaving craftsman.
