In response to the advancing armor threat, Germany developed several tank destroyers, including the Panzer IV/70(A). Based on an unmodified Panzer IV Ausf.J chassis, it was produced by Alkett as a temporary solution. Alongside the more prevalent Jagdpanzer IV/70(V), 278 of these tank-killer vehicles were manufactured from August 1944 to March 1945. A long-barreled 7.5cm PaK 42 gun was installed in the superstructure. To counterbalance the vehicle's nose-heavy design, the first four road wheels were steel-rimmed, and the vertical lower sides of the superstructure distinguished it from the Jagdpanzer IV/70(V).
