During his military service in Germany in 1916, Kirchner's health declined severely, leading him to relocate to Switzerland in 1917. There, he battled illnesses until his tragic end in Davos in 1938. This change in surroundings sparked a transformation in his artwork, with later pieces focusing on mountain landscapes and peasants, reflecting the bond between humanity and nature. Towards the end of the 1920s, Picasso's influence became prominent, yet Kirchner's symbolic, often allegorical landscapes remained uniquely his own. Additionally, Kirchner excelled in sculpture and graphic art, particularly woodcuts, demonstrating equal prowess in both black and white and vibrant colors.
