This is a rare exquisite original bronze plaque or relief, crafted by Christophe (Chistopher) Fratin, French Sculpter from 1801-1864. The scene (typical for Fratin) is a hunting lioness who has successfully captured a small animal (appears to be a goat). The animal details are fantastic and realistic, background elements are ambiguous and turbulent. The piece is signed and mounted in a wooden frame (possibly the original textured/patterned wood frame. The bronze relief measures 7 and 1/2 inches (19 cm) long and 5 inches (13 cm) high. Including the frame, the entire art piece is 9 and 1/2 inches long (24 cm) 7 inches (18 cm) high, and 1 inch (3 cm) deep. This is a lovely and highly collectible piece of artwork.
Christophe (Christopher) Fratin was one of the first successful French sculptors to successfully portray animals in bronze. His hallmark works would dramatically depict animal poses, typically featuring gaunt subjects, reflecting how they might exist in nature.
