Silica gels safeguard moisture-sensitive items or chemicals during storage and transit. They're suitable for drying nearly all gases and solids. Silica gels have wide-ranging applications in labs and technical, industrial sectors. In labs, they're used in desiccators, drying towers, and absorption tubes. In industry, they're mainly used in drying plants and various packaging. Not suitable for drying liquids or alkaline substances. Desiccants absorb water, binding it chemically (reversibly or irreversibly) or physically. Main desiccants fall into four categories: non-renewable chemical desiccants, renewable chemical desiccants, silica gels, and molecular sieves. To achieve low residual water content, silica gel capacity must be partially utilized. The less water-loaded the silica gel, the more effectively it dries. For instance, to achieve a residual water content of 1 mg/l, loading should not exceed 5.2 g water per 100 g silica gel.
