In 1933, the Southern Pacific introduced its 'Overnight Merchandise Service', initially combining rail and truck transport for LCL shipments. Dedicated weekday trains began in 1935, with boxcars painted black and orange for easy identification. A winged SP emblem was used, though a mock-up for car 9127 was never applied. The iconic Overnight arrow emblem appeared in 1946, and trailer-on-flatcar service was added in 1953. Trains averaged 25-50 cars and thrived into the diesel era. Now, Lionel elevates this service with a 1953 set, including an AC-9 locomotive, four Overnight boxcars, an outside braced boxcar, two Postwar-style cars, a special piggyback flatcar, and a VISION-equipped caboose, all in a striking black and orange scheme.
