It can also be used as a mulch in potted plants to help retain moisture and as an organic soil conditioner. Charcoal can be used as a substrate additive to increase drainage and aeration of plants. Often, quality horticultural charcoal is added to a potting mix to increase drainage abilities of soil while holding on to moisture and nitrogen, which stays present in a usable form in the root zone of your plants. Horticultural charcoal is also lightweight, reducing the final weight of the potting mix, and aids in maintaining air spaces in the substrate. Sphagnum moss is useful for a variety of gardening and crafting purposes due to its purer form. This once living moss has been dried after being harvested instead of being collected after dying like peat moss. Sphagnum moss has a neutral pH. Sphagnum Moss can be used in terrariums to prevent the soil from washing down into the drainage layer, as well as a planting medium for plants with special needs.
