A magnificent wooden instance of the classic Japanese ink line, or sumitsubo, a tool thought to originate from ancient Egypt and China. The sumitsubo holds spiritual significance, thus traditionally left in newly constructed shrines or temples as a cherished item. Today, it's presented to master carpenters who often donate it to shrines. This tool marks wood for cutting, akin to a Western chalk line. Its spacious well holds ink-soaked silk cotton. When the line is drawn, it picks up ink for marking. Adorned with a foo dog design, it measures 10 1/2 inches in length and 4 3/4 inches in height.
