The heaviest tank with functioning prototypes from World War II, the Panzerkampfwagen VIII Maus (Sd.Kfz 205), was born from a design by Ferdinand Porsche, approved by Adolf Hitler in 1942. Initially named 'Mammut' (Mammoth), it was later changed to 'Maus' (Mouse) in 1943, after being known as 'Maeuschen' (Mousy) briefly. Porsche's work on the design started in earnest in 1942, with the first prototype ready the following year.
