◆ Yukio Nakagawa
Born in Marugame City, Kagawa Prefecture in 1918 (Taisho 7).
He was an artist who destroyed traditional "ikebana" and created avant-garde "ikebana."
He contracted spinal caries in his childhood. He began ikebana under his aunt, who belonged to the Ikenobo school.
After the war, he was recognized by the landscape architect Mirei Shigemori and gained public attention. In 1951, he left the Ikenobo school at the age of 33 after his work featuring a Chinese cabbage. After that, he did not belong to any school, nor did he have any disciples, focusing on ikebana and engaging in activities such as performances with glass artists, calligraphers, photographers, and dancers.
His collections include "Hana," "Nakagawa Yukio's Flowers," "The Magic Mountain," and "Flower Person - Nakagawa Yukio's Flowers, Glass, and Calligraphy" (all published by this company). He received the Oribe Prize Grand Prix, the Japan Contemporary Art Promotion Award, and the Higashikawa Award.
He passed away in Sakaide City, Kagawa Prefecture in March 2012 at the age of 93 due to old age.
