This artwork by Craig Tinder portrays the waning days of Panzerkampfwagen VI Ausf.E (Sd Kfz 181) Tiger Tanks from Panzer-Abteilung (FkI) 301. Initially formed in North Africa in 1942, the unit was rebuilt in August 1944 following substantial losses. After narrowly evading annihilation in the Falaise Pocket during the Battle of Normandy, the unit rallied and launched unsuccessful counterattacks against the U.S. Third Army in Lorraine, France, before retreating to Germany. In the war's closing stages, Panzer-Abteilung 301 was bolstered by elements of the 9th Division, equipped with Tiger I tanks. These forces were deployed in pivotal battles, such as the Ardennes Offensive (Battle of the Bulge) and the Remagen Bridgehead, in desperate efforts to halt the advancing Allies. Despite the Tiger I's fearsome reputation, these late-war actions could not turn the tide, and by April 1945, the unit was retreating into the Ruhr Pocket, a last bastion of German resistance. The final three Tiger I tanks from Panzer-Abteilung 301 were destroyed on 16 April 1945 in the Ruhr Pocket, effectively signaling the end of the unit's role in the war. This scene captures the twilight of a once-renowned fighting force, as they confronted overwhelming Allied advances and the crumbling of the German war effort.
