In 1937, Germany initiated development of a 27-ton heavy tank designed to breach WWI-style trenches, enabling lighter tanks to engage in mobile combat. After three iterations, the 45-ton VK4501 specification was assigned to Porsche and Henschel in 1941. Porsche's prototype, the Tiger (P), was completed in 1942, featuring a unique suspension system and petrol-electric drive. Despite its theoretical advantages, practical issues arose, leading to production delays. While Henschel's production increased, Porsche resolved most mechanical problems by 1943, and Hitler ordered the fitting of the 8.8cm L/71 PaK43 to ninety Porsche Tiger tanks for the Battle of Kursk.
