The 'Forelle', a submarine constructed at Germaniawerft in Kiel during 1902, traces its origins back to 1849 when Bavarian soldier Wilhelm Bauer conceptualized an underwater vessel. Bauer's model, the 'Brandtaucher', was built by August Howaldt at Schweffel and Howaldt in 1850 but unfortunately sank during a test run due to insufficient funds. Following the experimental dive boat constructed in 1897 by Karl Leps, the 'Forelle' was built in 1902, based on designs by engineer Raymondo Lorenzo d´Equevilley-Montjustin, influenced by the works of Claude Gobet, Gustave Zédé, Isaac Peral, and the Englishman Waddington. This was Germany's first functional submarine, equipped with a conning tower, periscope, air purification system, and bilge pump. Powered by an electric motor using a 715 Ampère-hour battery, the 'Forelle' had a range of approximately 25 nautical miles at a speed of four knots.
