Vintage Carved Ironwood FolkArt Rustic Farmhouse Duck Water Bird

This appears to be Ironwood...it's very heavy for its size, is very dense and has the dark browns and reddish complexion of Ironwood. Beautifully grained with simple carvings, this is a larger piece weighing over 3-1/2 pounds. Ironwood is indigenous to parts of the Southwest and Northern Mexico and is left to the elements as it naturally prepares for carving. It is now illegal to harvest live Ironwood trees, so artisans search for fallen trees for their use. Ironwood trees also produce lovely flowers and bean pods that were a source of food for local natives and animal life.

Each carving is unique, however animals are a common subject, and birds the most commonly carved animal. This duck, loon, or coot is not carved symmetrically, she is slightly askew, with her head turned partially right, almost questioning in a way. The slight shift in her position "shows" movement and a bit of whimsy...she is lovely.
