Vintage, possibly Antique Galalith plastic necklace. Necklace has cream colored graduated round beads strung on a silver wire. It has a lovely hidden clasp. Necklace has been hot water tested and is genuine Galalith/Casein. Measures 18” long. In very good vintage condition.
Galalith is a milk casein product that resembles bakelite or celluloid. Sometimes erroneously referred to as “French Bakelite,” The term ‘Galalith’ was patented in 1906 and began to be used in jewelries. Many tons of Galalith were produced in both Germany and France, but the Germans were dependent on French casein for their production. As a result of the outbreak of World War I, restricting trade with Germany, the French soon captured the galalith market
