* A Portrait of Wes Montgomery with The Montgomery Brothers with The Strings and Horns by Gerald Wilson
Released in '68, this is a compilation album released after the death of jazz guitarist Wes Montgomery. It features tracks selected from "Wes, Buddy And Monk Montgomery" released in 1960 and "Montgomeryland" released in 1961, both from US Pacific Jazz, and "Jon Hendricks / A Good Git-Together" from 1959, in which Wes participated. These tracks were then re-arranged with strings and horn sections conducted by Gerald Wilson.
The album centers around guitar by Wes Montgomery, bass by Monk Montgomery, and piano/vibes by Buddy Montgomery, with a strong supporting cast including trumpet by Freddie Hubbard, alto sax by Pony Poindexter, tenor sax by Harold Land, and drums by Louis Hayes.
Therefore, for convenience, this album is considered the UK original version of the re-arranged tracks. The album has a unique character, transforming Wes's "A&M" works with an easy-listening feel into a funky big band jazz arrangement, resulting in a raw jazz-funk sound. It's a somewhat controversial album, but a must-listen for rare groove fans. Released in '68, UK, Liberty original (LBS-83178), Stereo.
