The M113, a fully tracked armored personnel carrier, was the backbone of U.S. Army mobile infantry units from its introduction in the 1960s. Widely used in the Vietnam War, it earned the 'Green Dragon' nickname from the Viet Cong and served as an APC and ACAV for allied forces. Its innovative aluminum armor made it lighter and stiffer, protecting crew and passengers from small arms fire. Though partly replaced by the M2 Bradley, over 6,000 M113s still equip the Army's Heavy Brigade Combat Teams compared to 4,000 Bradleys. The M113's versatility has led to numerous adaptations worldwide, representing about half of U.S. Army armored vehicles today. Over 80,000 M113s of all types have been produced and used by over 50 countries, making it one of the most widely used armored fighting vehicles in history. The Military Channel's 'Top Ten' series named it the most significant infantry fighting vehicle.
